Coaches: Self-Employed or Employee?

Dramatic Changes to How Coaches Get Hired in California
Monday February 11, 2019

Imagine that you’ve just received a career-defining offer to join a high profile coaching team in another State. You will get to work virtually, or be paid to travel to big companies to work. It will take your career to the next level, seal your reputation, and it pays very well! They flatter you by telling how honored they’d be if you will join them. Needless to say, you are thrilled UNTIL ... you realize you CAN’T do it. They don’t know that California just changed its 1099 laws. If they want you to join their consulting or coaching business, they’ll have to make you a full- or part-time employee in their company. They aren’t prepared for the cost of that. Here’s a list of vital questions to start from:

  • Does it matter that the rules in other states may be different?
  • Does this ONLY affect California Coaches and Consultants?
  • Can you hedge your bets that the State of California won’t notice when you file your taxes?
  • Is there any way around this? Could the company “payroll” you and pass off the responsibility to employ so they enjoy your services? If a staffing agency can become your “Employer of Record,” who will cover that extra administrative cost?
  • Does this apply to your entire customer base? Or can you realistically toggle your career between Employee and 1099?
This program is a MUST ATTEND event for all coaches and consultants.

This significant change in the law will become a bigger topic in coming months and the years to come. You need to be prepared! Be the first to understand it and find new ways to adapt and protect your career and income.

Session Outcomes/Benefits include:
  • Empowering YOU to understand the changes in labor law and manage their future contracts wisely
  • Help California consultants and coaches to make a smooth and calm transition during the inevitable media buzz that will ensue
  • Explore what to say to groups outside of California when they are making you offers to coach for their clients on a 1099

 Coach Timi Gleason

Timi is a member of three coaching teams (one in Texas, one in Northern California and the other in San Diego). In the last 60 days of 2018, her project managers have converted her over to employee status after they gave all their California coaches a choice: do the W-4 paperwork or opt out and stop coaching for us. Timi started her coaching and consulting career in 1994. Off  and   on Timi has directly contracted and at other times been “payrolled” coach or executive through a staffing company. However, since 2011, Timi has only worked on 1099 status. Timi just lost access to two years of a five-year contract because the contract holder “didn’t want the administrative headache of hiring his coaching team as employees.” SDPCA’s 2020 Club Mastermind is Timi’s pro-bono contribution to a group of member coaches who are systematically transforming their lives and careers between the dates of July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2020.

Jennifer P. Suberlak, Esq., Associate

Jennifer is an associate with Pettit Kohn Ingrassia Lutz & Dolin. Her practice focuses on employment and labor counseling and litigation. Jennifer helps employers manage the day-to-day issues arising in the employment context, craft and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance, and navigate the litigation process. She is currently sorting out and defending various law suits arising from the California Supreme Court’s 2018 decision to crack down on how companies assign 1099 and employee status. There have not been many court decisions or precedents decided over the changes yet, and are causing panic and confusion for many Californians. Jennifer earned her law degree at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law in 2013. Prior to law school, Jennifer attended UCLA, graduating summa cum laude, where she earned her Bachelor of Art’s degree in Anthropology. While attending law school, Jennifer was the Chief Managing Editor of Women’s Law Journal.

Intuitive Approach to Goal Setting

January 14, 2019

Would you like to stop creating goals from your ego, where you are coming from a place of not
feeling good enough, or setting goals, that deep down, you feel are not obtainable?

Are you tired of feeling the need to be in constant “action, action, action!” in order for you to hit your goals?

In reality, when goals are set from your ego you are not aligned with your authentic self and you find yourself comparing your success to others. The Genius Unlocked Coaching Institute’s approach uses your intuition to have your goals stop coming from your conscious mind and start coming from your unconscious mind so that you can be in alignment with your authentic self, be more committed to your goals, and truly manifest the life and business you desire.

This workshop combines the structured process of Neuro Linguistic Programing (NLP) and professional coaching methodologies with energy work, hypnotherapy, and meditation to give you a different perspective on goal setting. We guide you through visualizations to tap into your
intuition and create goals from your own unique internal representation system. This allows you to live in flow, attract what you want easily and effortlessly and be so aligned with your goals that you can’t not make them happen!

Session Outcomes/Benefits include:

  • A new and unique way to experience goal setting and enhance the way you represent your goals that is more than just a vision board.
  • Two tools for you and your clients to self-access your internal representation system
and your alignment with your goals.
  • A strategy for grounding and being present; creating a new mindset around goal setting
and shifting your  momentum towards the life and business you desire.

How and Why Coaches Should Use LinkedIn to Get Clients

Monday, December 10, 2018

There are many types of coaches: life, executive, career, health coaches and more. The topics coaches cover with clients may be different, but the one thing they all have in common is the fact that most of their clients are professionals. Whether it’s a business owner, HR director, sales manager, teacher, social media project manager, etc., most of the men and women looking to hire a coach are employed, have money, and for this reason the sales cycle is shorter. They understand the importance of professional development, and most likely they are on LinkedIn - the number one online business directory.

During this lively, interactive presentation, you’ll get the why’s and the how’s of using LinkedIn to turn warm leads into hot new coaching clients. Yes, there is a process to LinkedIn, and it doesn’t take 2 hours a day – how about 30 minutes weekly? You’ll learn who your connections know that may be your perfect client fit. As an example, you’ll witness how you can use LinkedIn’s powerful search tool to find school alum prospects that live in your area in a matter of minutes.

Discover ways to build trust, gain credibility, and generate good will. An especially important segment of the presentation, is the “Do’s and Don’ts” aka LinkedIn etiquette. Rick’s 90-minute LinkedIn primer will open your eyes to what LinkedIn is all about and how, with this knowledge, you can set yourself apart from coaches that haven’t learned the magic behind LinkedIn's curtain.

Session Outcomes/Benefits include:
  • Understand the mindset and GET the big picture of how LinkedIn works for you to build your coaching practice.
  • Learn the three critical success factors you need to thrive, on LinkedIn – profile, network and activities.
  • Get an inner circle secret of how Rick generated 24 referrals in 2 hours – and how you can too.

Transform Your Website into an Online Business Platform

Monday, November 12, 2018

A visitor to your website can be expected to stay about 8 seconds, unless…
You capture their attention to entice them stay a little longer and learn a little more.

Then you have 1-2 minutes of their attention before they leave, unless…
they engage with you, so that you can follow up with them and engage them in a longer conversation.

Many traditional websites are passive. People might read the free content offered, but often don’t, because… well, because people are busy. Even if they take the time to read the free content, they may not engage with you. As a result, the traditional approach to websites may not be driving the results you desire. You need a more comprehensive “platform” to broaden your reach and increase your impact.

Tom Teague, our own online business platform architect, will show you how to transform your website into an online business platform. He is an expert in the new state-of-the-art Kajabi-based website design, which includes public content, blog, marketing pages, email campaigns, sales pages, private content sites and much more. Tom will demonstrate the transformation of the new SDPCA website, and show us our new Coach Finder platform. Every SDPCA member in good standing will have their own personal web page which is searchable by both category and text search. A dynamic site, platform and approach, each Coach Profile page may now contain a wide variety of rich, well-formatted content including text, images, video and external links to your own website and your own free offers.

Session Outcomes/Benefits include:

  • Broaden your reach and increase your impact by creating an integrated online business platform
  • Learn how to transform your existing website into an online business platform
  • Create your best Coach Finder profile for the new SDPCA site

Certified High Performance Coach™
SDPCA’s VP Communications

Tom applies his 30+ years of experience designing and building software systems for large organizations like Exxon and NASA to work with coaches, consultants, authors, speakers, trainers, and professional service providers to broaden their reach, increase their impact, and improve their revenues using online business platforms. After investing tens of thousands of dollars – and thousands of hours – in “Internet Marketing Grad School” and meeting hundreds of small business owners frustrated with “tech issues” over the last five years, Tom realized that many of us are struggling in learning how to apply online technologies, because there are an overwhelming number of available technology choices. It’s like trying to piece together a puzzle without a box top picture. He saw a need to teach an organized, agile approach that aligns your platform with your business strategies so that you only create the minimum tech you need to support your business strategy. Tom created the six-step Agile Business Success System to help clients manage the complexity and get their online business platform up and operating quickly! Using the Agile Business Success approach, Tom consults, coaches, and teaches the skills you need to finally get your online business platform operational and working for you!
